Agape Consulting, LLC: Success Defined

In today’s fast-paced world, success often comes at the cost of personal fulfillment. But for Shelton and Yvette Torbert, founders of Agape Consulting, LLC, success isn’t just about professional achievements—it’s about creating harmony between work, relationships, and personal well-being. Built on a foundation of unconditional care, integrity, and self-awareness, Agape offers a unique approach to coaching and leadership development, one rooted in decades of experience, faith, and a steadfast commitment to helping others thrive.

The Agape Mission: A Purpose-Driven Approach

When asked about the long-term vision for Agape Consulting, Shelton doesn’t hesitate:

“One of the things that we desire to do is to help people. And I believe the products that we have are a catalyst to help those individuals. For example, personal coaching. What I have noticed over the years is a lot of times, a CEO or a manager – they may be successful in a professional career, but in their personal life, they’re not as successful… They’ve missed critical moments in their children’s lives, missed critical moments in their relationship with their spouses as well, because they are so busy trying to be CEO, so busy trying to be a manager.”

This balance between personal and professional fulfillment is the core of Agape’s mission. Both Shelton and Yvette emphasize the importance of aligning professional ambitions with personal values. Their approach isn’t about checking boxes or chasing titles—it’s about building a meaningful life.

Agape Consulting operates out of The Offices at Spenryn, a dynamic coworking space that provides businesses like Agape the flexibility, resources, and community they need to succeed. Whether hosting leadership workshops or conducting one-on-one coaching sessions, Agape leverages the professional amenities and collaborative environment offered by Spenryn to deliver transformative services.

Yvette describes their work succinctly:

“I think a lot of people have more skills, more experience, and more background than they think they have. Moving to the next level is not always as much about what’s on paper, but what’s in their heart—to push forward and kind of go on to the next step.”

The Agape Difference: Genuine Care and Connection

What sets Agape Consulting apart isn’t just their expertise or tools—it’s the genuine care and connection Shelton and Yvette bring to every interaction. Shelton reflects on their name and the deeper meaning behind it:

“The name is rooted in biblical terms. ‘Agape’ means unconditional love. But in a business setting, it means unconditional caring, unconditional respect. There are many other coaching companies out there doing a superb job, but what puts us over that laser-thin line is the care and concern we bring. Our name itself generates a conversation, and that’s where we start.”

Their commitment to this philosophy is evident in every aspect of their work. Shelton and Yvette don’t just see clients—they see people with unique stories, challenges, and potential. This personalized, relationship-driven approach is what keeps clients coming back and spreading the word about Agape’s services.

Agape’s presence at The Offices at Spenryn strengthens their ability to foster these connections. As part of a vibrant coworking community, they benefit from a network of professionals and collaborative spaces that align perfectly with their mission.

“Everything has been word of mouth. We’ve connected with quite a few people on Facebook. I created our Facebook presence, and I get a lot of questions and inquiries through there.”

Tools for Transformation: MBTI and Leaders Practices Inventory 360 Feedback Assessments

One of Agape’s standout tools is the Leader’s Practices Inventory 360 Feedback Assessment, a powerful method for helping leaders gain a well-rounded perspective on their strengths and weaknesses. Shelton explains,

“The Leader’s Practices Inventory 360 Feedback Assessment contains five principles of exemplary leadership. One of them is modelling the way.’ You need to be an example of what you want to see in your team. Another is ‘inspiring a shared vision.’ A lot of people have a vision, but how do you communicate that? How do you articulate it to your team or organization?”

Another cornerstone of their approach is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a well-known personality assessment that Shelton and Yvette use to help clients better understand themselves and their teams. Shelton shares an example:

“Say I’m an introvert, and you’re an extrovert. I tend not to want to talk too much because it drains my energy. But you, as an extrovert, love talking—that’s how you get your energy. Through MBTI, people realize, ‘Hey, if I’m introverted, I need to put strategies in place to help me communicate effectively without feeling drained.”

Yvette adds her perspective:

“The MBTI works for a wide range of ages, and the results are transferable into everyday situations—whether it’s family, work, or personal relationships.”

Overcoming Challenges: Staying the Course

Running a small consulting firm comes with its fair share of challenges. Shelton candidly shares one of Agape’s ongoing struggles:

“Just trying to find consistent resources. Even though we’re a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, breaking into those larger government contracts can be difficult. The government says there are set-aside contracts for us, but accessing them feels like trying to crack a safe.”

But despite these hurdles, the Torberts remain steadfast in their purpose. Shelton draws on a metaphor from his military experience:

“In the military, we navigated with a compass. If I’m supposed to follow a five-degree azimuth and I accidentally follow a seven-degree azimuth, I’ll be way off course after ten miles. The same applies to Agape—we know our ‘why,’ and we’re staying on course.”

A Bright Future: Growing with Intention

As they look to the future, Shelton and Yvette aren’t focused on rapid expansion or chasing fleeting opportunities. Instead, they’re doubling down on what works: authentic connections, tailored coaching, and staying true to their mission. Shelton shares, “We’re not looking for hundreds of clients. We’re looking for those one or two meaningful partnerships that align with our vision and values.”

Yvette emphasizes the importance of consistency in building success:

“You won’t always see immediate results, but consistency and integrity will always carry you through.”
